Job Reference #022972

Research Associate 4 and/or Research Associate 5 (Accelerator Physicists/One or more positions)

The J. Bennett Johnston, Sr., Center for Advanced Microstructures and Devices (CAMD) is a Synchrotron Light Source research facility operated by Louisiana State University located in Baton Rouge. At the heart of the facility is a 1.3 GeV second generation electron storage ring which provides radiation extending from infra red through VUV up to X-rays for use in a diverse scientific research program. The facility operates on a continuous 24/7 schedule.

The accelerator group, which is responsible for operating and developing the storage ring and its associated injection accelerator, currently has one or more vacancies for Accelerator Physicists.

Responsibilities: participates in the beam studies program at CAMD which aims to improve and extend the understanding of the Light Source to maintain and improve the level of performance as required by the science research activities; contributes to computational and theoretical studies aimed at increasing the beam brightness of the storage ring through the elimination of beam instabilities driven by cavity higher order modes and by reducing the vertical beam size through emittance coupling control; contributes to computational and theoretical studies needed to develop plans for installing a second Insertion Device in CAMD and to upgrade the existing 7.5 T superconducting wiggler magnet; participates in the development of designs for a high brightness 3rd or 4th generation Light Source which could constitute a South eastern regional facility.

Required Qualifications: (Both Levels)Ph.D. in Physics, Engineering or a related field; (RA 5) one year of accelerator research experience; familiarity with the major accelerator software design codes.

Special Qualifications: (Both Levels)ability and willingness to work during evenings and weekends occasionally as required in general support of the storage ring. Salary and level will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. See our website at www.camd.lsu.edu for further details about CAMD. Review of applications for the position will begin immediately. For full consideration, applications must be submitted by December 01, 2008. Applications will be accepted until candidate is selected.
